CAIRO (Reuters) – The U.S. Navy Fifth Fleet announced Saturday that the guided missile cruiser USS Monterey (CG 61) confiscated an illegal shipment of weapons from a stateless dhow in the international waters of the North Arabian Sea on May 6-7 .
“The arsenal contained dozens of advanced Russian anti-tank missiles, thousands of Chinese Type 56 assault rifles, as well as hundreds of PKM machine guns, sniper rifles and rocket-propelled grenade launchers. Other weapon components included advanced optical sights,” the Bahrain-based fleet said in a statement.
It added that the material is in U.S. custody pending final disposal while the original source and intended destination of the material are being investigated.
“After all illegal cargoes were removed, the dhow was checked for seaworthiness and, after questioning, the crew were provided with food and water prior to their release,” the statement said.
