Last year, because we had sooooo many dinners as a family, we started the centuries-old tradition of rose, thorn and bud. Do you wanna play it? This is how it works …
Basically everyone goes around sharing a rose (a positive thing that happened that day), a thorn (a negative thing that happened that day), and a bud (something to look forward to).
The conversation starter works a lot better than asking vaguely, “How was your day?” As soon as I read that asking your young child after their hard day at school is like asking an adult, “How have the last 20 years of your life been?”
I love hearing about boys’ ups and downs, like having a new crush or dreading a science project (although Anton often says his rose is “screen time,” moan). Also, it’s nice to share mine, even though I’m always such a mother ™: “My rose is hanging out with you guys !!!!!!”
So! On this spring afternoon I would like to ask you: What is the rose, the thorn and the bud in your life right now? What do you generally enjoy, worry, and look forward to? I would love to hear. xo
