People often call eyes the window to the soul, but in Tata Harper’s case it is definitely her skin. Her radiant, moist and radiant charisma is fascinating, but of course it’s not just the superficial variety, this brilliance is also deep in the soul. And that goes for business too. As the founder and CEO of the first luxury clean skin care company, Harper wants healthy skin for everyone, but again, her mission is about much more than just looking good on the outside – she wants to influence the world by making it a cleaner and safe place. It’s this rare duality that makes us so drawn to Harper and their brand – their charisma is ingrained in their DNA.
When she can, Harper lives on the company’s farm in Vermont, which is where all the magic happens: we’re talking about fields, marigolds, lavender, sunflowers, and every herb imaginable, carefully grown, picked, and bottled for her clean skin care line. In fact, every Tata Harper product is made on the farm, from their world famous Elixir Resume (containing 38 active ingredients) to their hugely popular Cream Blush and Resurfacing BHA Glow Mask. We get it – this all sounds too good to be true, but it is, and Harper is living the literal dream.
When the opportunity arose to interview the CEO for our new series Wake Up Call, the entire CS team unanimously said yes without hesitation. Who wouldn’t want to take a look at the morning routine of one of the world’s most successful business women? And when you learn more about their rituals, it’s pretty clear why.
Read on to learn more about how this skin care mogul starts her day and why she’s such a delicious recipe for success in all areas of your life.

What does a typical day look like for you?
I like to sleep about eight hours, but wake up early at 6:30 a.m. to get a head start on the day. It sounds cliché, but I miss living on the farm and hearing the roosters crow in the morning. This really makes waking up a lot easier and feels a lot more natural.
What do you do first when you wake up?
I used to have a habit of checking my email first thing in the morning, but now I try to meditate for about 15 minutes before fully plugging in. I found that practicing breathing exercises really helped me feel more centered and focused throughout the day. After that, I quickly scan my email and reply to anything that is very urgent.

What is your morning routine before work?
I love working out in the morning. Right now I see a virtual personal trainer and focus on core strengthening exercises for about an hour. Exercising in the morning has myriad health benefits, such as lowering blood pressure and feeling more balanced and level-headed. I don’t train to be fit, but to feel strong both mentally and physically. For me it really is the most effective stress reliever. I’ll jump in the shower right after a workout to freshen up my skin and body before doing my skin care routine.
Describe your morning beauty routine from start to finish.
I believe more is more when it comes to my skin care routine and I use a variety of our products twice a day. I always start with a peeling with Regenerating Cleanser. The daily scrub really makes my skin breathe and glow as it removes any debris that builds up overnight. It also helps the products to absorb better. I follow with Hydrating Floral Essence to prepare my skin for the treatment and to penetrate my serum deeper. Then it’s all about shifts. I use Elixir Vitae all over my face, next I use Elixir Vitae Eye Serum and then Repairative Moisturizer.

What do you eat for breakfast?
I sometimes fast until around 10:30 am when I drink celery juice. I find it really helps with digestion and is best on an empty stomach. It’s full of vitamins and minerals, and contains phytonutrients with anti-inflammatory properties. Celery juice certainly isn’t enough to hold me on until lunch. Right now I’m obsessed with the Danish rye and sourdough bread from Ole and Steen. I like to eat it with cashew butter and dragon fruit jam.
I am also making my version of a latte. I mix Ashwagandha, Lion’s Mane, Cordyceps, Chaga, Reishi, Mucuna Pruriens, He Shou Wu and add oat milk. Delicious and wonderful for your immunity and longevity.
What are your morning media rituals?
I like to call it my “media diet”. I usually start by reading my favorite newsletter Air Mail – a weekly digital newsletter covering global topics from style and fashion to politics and the environment. Every article I read is super interesting and insightful and not something I can find anywhere else.
Then I usually check my social media accounts – Instagram and Twitter. When I have time, especially on weekends, I like to listen to podcasts. My favorite is FatMascara: I love hearing Jessica Matlin and Jennifer Goldstein on the FatMascara podcast, which is made for anyone obsessed with beauty! Every week they have amazing and savvy guests to share their insights, stories and experiences in the beauty industry.

What are your favorite books?
Right now I’m in love with Braiding Sweetgrass: indigenous wisdom, scientific knowledge and the teachings of the plants of Robin Wall Kimmerer.
What do you always have on your bedside table to ensure a smooth and successful morning?
I love waking up to the natural morning light. Since it is not always possible A sunrise alarm clock is a good alternative. I program the time I like to wake up and the built-in light gradually gets brighter in the minutes before the alarm goes off. I also have a charging station where I charge all of my devices to make sure I don’t put them to bed and they are fully charged in the morning.
And of course a carafe full of water. Hydration is very important to me and I like to drink water as soon as I wake up.

What is your favorite soundtrack to prepare?
I always enjoy listening to Latin music whenever I can, especially salsa. It’s part of my Colombian heritage. It is very happy and gives me the feeling that I am on vacation in a foreign country.
What’s your daily uniform? How has that changed during the quarantine?
I’ve always loved fashion and quarantine hasn’t changed that. I haven’t embraced the leisure trend and convenience isn’t who I am. I like to get dressed for work and express my mood through fashion.

If you had an extra hour every morning, how would you use it?
I love spending time with my children and taking them outside for walks. Especially in the summer months on our Vermont farm.
What are a thing or two that you do each day to lead a more present, mindful, and joyful life?
I definitely love spending time outside. Being outdoors helps me gain awareness, connect with nature, and connect with the present moment. I realized how important it is for me to meditate and take the time to connect with my mind. Eliminating all distractions is great, and it can be beneficial in many ways. I find it great for mindfulness, relaxation, and stress relief.
I’ve also started working on something that will help me get through my work day in a more joyful way. I take on one task at a time and concentrate on the task at hand. When I’m done, I try to take a short break and move on to the next task. It’s a more relaxed and mindful way of getting things done, and I feel like it has definitely improved my performance.

If you could limit your success to one thing or a moment, what would it be?
I am very proud when a customer tells me how much our products have helped their skin. It makes me proud of what I and my team are doing, and it really validates the efforts we make every day to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
I never leave the house without … EO disinfectant wipes.
If the day had more hours, I would … Take dance lessons every day.
Healthiest morning habit … I have my first meal around 10:30 am so I don’t break my 16-hour fast.
Worst morning habit … I check my email when I wake up.
One thing I want to be known for is … Make an impact on the world by making it cleaner and safer. To be a really good dog mom too.
The only thing I fear most is … In the age of digital photos, I fear that one day I will wake up and all my pictures will be erased – and completely lose all of my memories.
When I feel this fear … Back up my photos to iCloud.
The book I always recommend is … The Blackberry Farm Cookbook: Four Seasons for Good Food and the Good Life by Sam Beale and Lair: Radical Houses and Hideouts of Movie Villains by Chad Oppenheim and Andrea Gollin.
The 3 qualities you need to be successful in life are … Confidence, creative problem solving and a long-term perspective.
