Michael Gudinski, the world-renowned music entrepreneur and founder of the Mushroom Group, has passed away at the age of 68.
The shock news was confirmed in the past hour by the media in Gudinski’s native Australia.
Gudinski is survived by his wife Sue and children Kate and Matt and grandchildren Nine-Rose and Lulu.
“It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Michael Gudinski AM overnight,” said the Mushroom Group in a statement.
“The popular Australian music legend died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Melbourne, Australia.”
The statement went on, “Michael’s legacy will live on through his family and the hugely successful Mushroom Group – an enduring embodiment of decades of passion and determination by an incredible man.
“The family respectfully requests privacy during this incredibly difficult time and thanks everyone for their support.”
Gudinski, born in Victoria, Australia, in 1952, founded Mushroom Records in 1972.
He continued to work with artists such as Kylie Minogue, MacKenzie Theory, the Skyhooks, the Choirboys and many others.
Today the Mushroom Group comprises a collective of independent record labels such as Liberator Music, Liberation Records and Bloodlines as well as a music publisher (Mushroom Music) and a neighboring rights company (Good Neighbor).
The Mushroom Group is headquartered in Melbourne, Australia and also has two booking agencies (Premier artist and The Harbor Agency) and artist management companies (Converge Management and Role Model Artists).

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Michael Gudinski AM overnight. The popular Australian music legend died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Melbourne, Australia.
Michael Gudinski was a key figure in shaping the Australian music industry. In 1972, when he was just 20, he founded the Mushroom Group, which grew into Australia’s largest independent entertainment group, spanning touring, record labels, publishing, merchandising, booking agencies, film and television production and creative services. Some of Australia’s most famous albums have been released under one of its Mushroom Group record labels. His tour company, Frontier Touring, is Australia’s premier tour operator and has toured the biggest names in global music since it was founded in 1979.
Michael was a larger than life personality and was widely respected for his unwavering passion for all music, especially Australian music. More recently, when the music industry has been hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, Michael Music From The Home Front, The Sound and The State Of Music designed and developed platforms that showcase and support contemporary Australian music at an incredibly difficult time should. It speaks for the man he was that he was particularly proud of his countless illustrious career successes, of which he was particularly proud of the industry he loved.
Michael was known for his loyalty and dedication. His ability to achieve the unattainable against insurmountable adversity has been proven time and again and speaks for his absolute passion for his career and life.
Michael’s family loved him dearly, and Michael in turn adored his wife Sue, son Matt and partner Cara, daughter Kate and husband Andrew, and their children Nina-Rose and Lulu. They meant everything to him and he was incredibly proud of them. Michael often referred to his more than 200 employees as the mushroom family, many of which had spent decades in his job.
Michael’s legacy will live on through his family and the hugely successful Mushroom Group – an enduring embodiment of decades of passion and determination by an incredible man.
