LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – The Golden Globes will be distributed on Sunday amid pandemic conditions on a night that could see big wins for streaming service Netflix, honors for the late actor Chadwick Boseman and a few celebrities in pajamas.
Netflix Inc (NASDAQ 🙂 enters the Sunday Film and TV Virtual Celebration hosted by New York and Los Angeles comedians Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. The nomination for 22 films is dominant, but still looking for the first best film win.
That could be from the period drama “Mank” about the screenwriter of “Citizen Kane”, which leads with six nods, including for best drama film, for actors Gary Oldman and Amanda Seyfried, and for director David Fincher.
However, experts say a “shortage” win is nowhere near assured by the small and unpredictable Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), whose members select the winners.
“There’s everything to do with pedigree, and there is a sense that awards are love stories about the industry. But I think ‘Mank’ isn’t everyone’s favorite,” said Alison Willmore, film critic on entertainment website Vulture.com
The biggest competition comes from Searchlight Pictures’ “Nomadland,” a moving documentary drama about van residents in recession-ravaged America, and the 1960s star-studded Netflix hippie courtroom drama “The Trial of the Chicago 7” . The #MeToo revenge comedy “Promising Young Woman” and the unsettling aging story “The Father” round off the nominations for the film drama.
The Disney + TV film of the Broadway hit “Hamilton” and “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” from Amazon (NASDAQ 🙂 Studios, a satire about the America of former President Donald Trump, are considered top performers in the category of the best comedy or music films .
For television, the royal Netflix series “The Crown”, whose current season focuses on the late Princess Diana, leads with six nods, followed by the quirky small-town comedy “Schitt’s Creek” on pop-TV.
Boseman, whose death at the age of 43 lies in an unknown battle against cancer-stricken fans and the industry, is considered a favorite for a posthumous best actor Golden Globe. Boseman’s last appearance as the brazen trumpeter in the drama “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” was released after his death.
“It’s a great space-filling performance that stands out from many other competitors,” said Willmore.
Jane Fonda and TV producer Norman Lear (NYSE 🙂 receives lifetime achievement awards while a host of stars including Riz Ahmed (“Sound of Metal”), Andra Day (“The United States vs. Billie Holiday”) and Viola Davis (“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”) “), Daniel Kaluuya (” Judas and the Black Messiah “) and Leslie Odom Jr. (” One Night in Miami “) stand before acting honors.
This year, because of the pandemic, they will be waiting at home for their names to be revealed instead of walking the red carpet before eating and drinking at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Nicholas Hoult, who is nominated for the role of Russian Emperor Peter III in the television comedy “The Great,” said he would be watching from home in London, which will be well after midnight.
“I’ll probably be sitting down in bed with the top half of my tuxedo and pajamas,” said Hoult.
