In order for a relationship to really thrive, it’s always a good idea to put one on one aside in the form of a good old-fashioned date night. Especially for those of us who work from home. It’s easy to bleed work / school / kids / romance together, and so often really good time falls by the wayside. For me, this need to allow time to focus on my relationships increased during quarantine and inspired this term: Container of Bliss. I started creating deliberate time with those I love that was completely disconnected from other aspects of my life – instead of just letting it happen (or not letting it happen).
I read last summer Become by Michelle Obama. A relatively small story about love and expectations still strikes me. Michelle writes about a time in her life when Barack would regularly be late for dinner and she and her girls would wait in frustration before giving up and eating without him. He was in the middle of a busy season of work and time was the victim. Michelle realized that she was causing the failure of her family by creating expectations that Barack could not always meet. So she set limits by saying Hey, from here on, our dinner will be ready at the same time each night. If you show up, great. If not, there will be leftovers in the fridge. By creating structure instead of living with assumptions, they were always happy when Barack showed up and empathetic when he couldn’t.
The same lesson applies to planning a date night with those you love. All too often, between work, our phones, and everything in between, we get caught in a flow that skips curated activities that bring us closer together. Whether with your partner, your best friend, or yourself, take the time to be together makes sense is a not-so-secret ingredient for a happy, fulfilling relationship.
Read on for some of my favorite date ideas that will strengthen any special bond.

Date night ideas for you and your significant other …
Have an outdoor picnic
There is nothing like anchoring in nature with someone you love. Whenever the sun shines and the temperature rises, my husband and I take the opportunity to go outside. We love putting together a smorgasbord of goodies or ordering an epic cheese platter from Antonelli and going to one of our favorite parks. Sometimes we bring our dogs or a deck of cards. In other cases, we’ll catch up on things that we don’t talk about every day.
Make a special dinner
I made a few dim sum dishes for the first time a few weeks ago and it was so much fun experimenting with ingredients in new ways (a lot of them were already in my pantry!). Even if your partner isn’t that much of a cook, you can invite them to help with chopping, prepping, reading the menu, or testing the taste. 🙂 Leaving a comfort zone to prepare a meal you’ve never made before is exciting and so much fun.
Watch a drive-in movie
Many cities across the country are throwing it back the old-fashioned way, opting for drive-in movie options to keep communities safe and entertained. Watching movies together affects dopamine levels and can be a great way to immerse yourself in new conversations. If your region doesn’t offer a drive-through, you can create a movie theater atmosphere in your living room with lots of blankets, popcorn, cocktails and candles.

Date night ideas for you and yours Best friend…
Whether you are physically together or separately, Scattergories is one of the best games for the word lovers out there. A group of four or more people is ideal, but any number of people will work. Zoom exhaustion is real and sometimes it’s nice to play instead of talking. We want to virtually connect family and friends for a larger group.
Take a virtual course
Instead of looking for things to talk about, take a virtual class together. Then talk about what you learned later. My good friend and I both have an appreciation for wine and the South of France so we took a wine tasting class together and absolutely loved it. There’s nothing like traveling there together, but we got as close as possible.
Take a long walk or hike in a new place
Even if you don’t live near an ocean, mountains, or other great natural landmarks, there is so much nature right in your yard. Put on comfortable shoes and explore them together. Leave your phones at home for added benefit.

Date night ideas for you
Paint with watercolors
I recently painted the cover of my diary with inspiration from a watercolor palette from this book. It was so therapeutic and relaxing, if challenging. And I’m proud every time I look in my diary.
Find a local flower shop and arrange your room
Ordering flowers online or buying a bunch at your local flea market is certainly convenient, but putting together an arrangement creatively adds an extra sense of accomplishment. Visit your local flower shop for seasonal blooms and greenery. Consider building a Pinterest board or go with a retailer!
Create a spa day at home
We love this article on creating a spa-worthy bathroom for the home. For extra luxury, pamper your whole day and your home like a wellness vacation. Add in a soothing face mask, rejuvenating body scrub, and mani / pedi.
