Common IDEAS have the power to broaden perspectives, change thinking and move lives. Here are two ideas for the curious to explore:

I.

Elaine Kamarck on the President’s responsibilities:

“Despite the balance of power – the big house on Pennsylvania Avenue, Camp David, Air Force One that never (ever!) Gets stuck in traffic – the president is responsible for a unit over which he’s quite limited in performance. Of course, this is exactly what the founding fathers wanted. Yet try to tell the American public, or the world, if something really goes wrong. As we have seen, a great failure of government becomes a failure of the president, whether the president likes it or not. ”

II.

Brad Stulberg and Steve Magnes on how to be passionate:

“The mindful living with passion begins with the realization that passion in and of itself is neither good nor bad. it’s simple – a strong emotion that is rooted in our biology and psychology. It is not something that we magically find, but something that we develop by following our interests and gradually devoting more time and energy to them. The next step to mindfully living with passion is to become aware of your dark side. Only when one understands the pitfalls of obsessive and fear-driven passion and intentionally takes steps to avoid them does passion gain the potential to be productive. However, it is not enough to avoid pitfalls. An equal challenge is to defy current trends that favor instant gratification and instead actively adopt the mindset of mastery: maintaining the drive from within; Focus on the process over the results; not worrying about being the best, but worrying about being the best to get better; Acute failure in chronic gains; Exercise patience; and to pay full attention to our aspirations. ”
