A new sign up bonus for three Southwest branded credit cards makes it easier to access the airline’s coveted credit cards Companion Pass.
Starting February 9, 2021, the offer reads as follows: “Earn a Companion Pass by February 28, 2022 plus 30,000 points after spending $ 5,000 on purchases in the first three months.”
With the Companion Pass you can take another passenger with you for free until February 28, 2022 (excluding taxes and fees from USD 5.60 each way).
These cards usually do not offer a direct companion pass. Instead, you typically need to fly 100 qualifying one-way flights or earn 125,000 qualifying points in a calendar year to receive a Companion Pass which – if earned this way – is valid for the remainder of the calendar year in which you acquired it, plus the full calendar year thereafter.
The Companion Pass offered as part of this promotion is only valid for one year.
Previously, the cards offered a two-tier bonus where you could earn up to 80,000 points – 50,000 points if you spent $ 2,000 in the first three months, plus 30,000 points if you spent $ 10,000 in the first nine months.
The Southwest Cards offered a similar limited-time bonus in early 2019. The timing of this promotion is unusual as many people change their travel plans because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Just one year of Companion Pass access may not be tempting enough if you don’t use it at all in the first few months of 2021.
However, if you’re a loyal Southwest passenger who is currently traveling, or if you’re planning on traveling later in the year, this bonus is a more affordable way to get your hands on the coveted benefit.
Note that if you already have one of the three Southwest consumer credit cards or have received a bonus on a Southwest card in the past 24 months, You are not eligible for this offer.
