TOKYO (Reuters) – The President of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, will visit Japan in May, Kyodo news agency said on Saturday, as the nation struggles to contain a surge in COVID-19 cases ahead of the Games.

Bach will attend a torch relay ceremony in the western city of Hiroshima on May 17 and meet Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga the next day, Kyodo said, citing factual sources. According to Kyodo, Bach will support Japan’s commitment to the safe hosting of the Summer Games.

“We are aware of President Bach’s intention to come to Japan and would welcome such a visit,” the Tokyo Olympics Organizing Committee said in a statement. “However, nothing specific was decided.”

Tokyo Olympics representatives could not be reached if asked to comment outside of normal business hours.

With less than 100 days to go to the Tokyo Olympics, Japan expanded quasi-emergency response to 10 regions on Friday as a fourth wave of COVID-19 cases spread.

Suga, who is on a state visit to the United States, said at a news conference Friday that he told President Joe Biden he was determined to move the Games forward and that Biden was offering his support.
