Smart Home Tech: What You Should Know About Smart Lights

Smart lighting is a fast growing segment of the smart home tech market – and it’s easy to see why. When done right, smart lighting can add personalization and ambience to any part of your home. Here’s what you need to know.

Everyone will tell you that lighting can really make a huge difference when it comes to transforming a space and creating a welcoming ambience. From increasing daily productivity to promoting relaxation, lighting can do wonders for a home. Finding the right lighting, however, is the hard part.

“Smart lighting is great because it allows you to customize and adapt to your activity or mood,” Bulbrite president Cathy Choi wrote via email. “In the morning it is great to start the day with bright, cool lights to recharge your batteries, but when the day gets warm, dim lights are the way to settle into the night.”

“Setting schedules can even be helpful when it’s time to wake up or relax. For example, the bathroom lights can be set to turn on full brightness in the morning when it’s time to shave or put makeup on and turn down to a dark setting overnight. It can also be controlled via voice assistants such as Amazon Alexa or Google Home to set and adjust the lighting hands-free. “

The first step is to decide which areas you want to control the lighting in. Would you like to be able to regulate the temperature of the light from warm to cold? Change colors or set accents? If so, you should probably take care of it smart lightbulbs.

However, in large rooms with many lightbulbs, the price can add up, so smart switches may be more economical. Another challenge with smart lightbulbs can be the controls as they require constant power for connectivity.

There are different solutions – from switch guards and wall-mounted buttons to specialized switches Specifically designed to control smart light bulbs and strips.

Smart switches pose their own challenges for older homes too. In the past there were few solutions that would work without a neutral conductor. More recently, however, there have been many advances in electrical efficiencies for module designs that allow the smart device to operate without a neutral.

If you do not want to replace the switches, you should use a licensed electrician. Installation of each switch takes approximately 15 minutes.

Smart lamps and switches can operate on a variety of different Logs including Wi-Fi, ZigBee and Z-Wave.

“You can find Wi-Fi devices primarily in brick and mortar stores as well as on e-commerce websites. This is largely due to the ease with which customers install them,” said Mitchell Davis, vice president of connected home at Jasco, via email. “Hub-based solutions (Z-Wave & ZigBee) are very dominant in electrical distributors, wholesalers and on the Internet. “

Adding too many Wi-Fi devices to a home network can exceed the capacity of some commercially available routers or routers provided by Internet Services. It’s always a good idea to update yours Home network Still, I recommend a mesh network. If you plan to add smart switches to many rooms, a hub-based solution such as Lutron Caseta, Inovelli or Jasco is a good option.

Smart plugs are perfect for controlling lamps and Christmas lights. Personally, we prefer TP-Link, Here you will find solutions for indoor and outdoor use as well as options for monitoring energy consumption, power strips and replacement sockets. The app also works with its smart switches and light bulbs.

Streak of light are great fun for children’s rooms. They also look great above or under cabinets in the kitchen and can be used behind the TV or bar for entertainment, tray covers, mirrors, artwork, shelving, desks and monitors.

Motion sensors and floodlights can protect your home from intruders. If you have outdoor surveillance cameras, consider options for smart lights that emit infrared when they are not visibly turned on so the cameras can see in the dark.

Smart lighting is a rapidly growing segment. Now there are many options for different sizes and areas of the home, and they are more aesthetic overall. You can find great options at your local hardware dealer or online. Make sure you choose products that are compatible with other devices in your home and can be easily controlled by anyone in the house.
