The powerful RE / MAX team joins eXp Realty

The Lahey Group operates in the Washington, DC area. The move is the second big success for eXp in less than a week.

A high performing RE / MAX team in the Washington, DC area jumped the ship for eXp Realty, the latest in a growing line of recruiting for the fast growing virtual brokerage.

The Lahey group includes 21 agents working in Maryland and Virginia as well as in the US capital. Jonathan Lahey started the team more than a decade ago and told Inman he was grateful for the years he spent at RE / MAX. However, his goal is to expand the team beyond current markets and at RE / MAX, which would require buying franchises in new locations.

“EXp didn’t have these limitations,” he said. “I didn’t have to buy an eXp franchise.”

Lahey said that until a few months ago he was skeptical of eXp and thought the company’s business model was not necessarily sustainable. As a result, he declined repeated attempts to recruit other agents.

Over time, however, Lahey noticed that teams he looked up to were leaving other brokers or giving up their independent status.

“One at a time, they switched to eXp,” said Lahey. “These are people who are my colleagues or who I look up to. I started to think that maybe I was missing out on something. “

The final straw came when a solo agent Lahey knows told him she made $ 4 million through eXp’s revenue-sharing program.

“My jaw dropped,” said Lahey.

Soon he was questioning agents on his team about the move. He told Inman that he was secretly hoping they would push back and refuse to move, but instead each and every one of my agents said, “Let’s do this.”

Lahey made the move official on April 1st, the same week that a high-profile Keller Williams team came to eXp. EXp also hosted large teams in February and October.

In the case of the Lahey Group, the team described itself in a statement on Tuesday as “the highest-ranking team of homeowners in Maryland and the 24th nationally in their franchise” in 2020.

Now that the move is complete, Lahey looks forward to “transforming people’s lives through real estate”. And he added that with eXp, the team is not tied to a specific location.

“We can,” he said, “help change the lives of agents everywhere.”
