SOUTHAMPTON, England (Reuters) – Southampton fought 2-2 in the Premier League after two goals against Burnley on Sunday and increased their comfort above the relegation zone with only their second win in 13 league games.

Burnley took the lead from a Chris Wood penalty in the 12th minute after VAR discovered Kyle Walker-Peters had overturned Erik Pieters.

The Clarets then doubled their advantage with a nice goal from Czech striker Matej Vydra after Wood sent a long ball forward from Ben Mee.

But the Saints got back into the game with a goal from Stuart Armstrong, the Scottish midfielder who drove home after a clever shot from Danny Ings.

Former Burnley striker Ings ended the competition with a good solo goal that beat Mee, slipping past James Tarkowski and pushing the ball through Nick Pope’s legs.

Burnley struggled to recover from losing the lead in eleven minutes and a home-team winner seemed inevitable after James Ward-Prowse pounded a ride against the bottom of the bar and Burnley keeper Nick Pope parried a great reflex to fending off a distractor Armstrong drive.

The winner came in the 66th minute when Pope saved an Ings ride, but Theo Walcott clung to the loose ball and got Nathan Redmond out by the back post, who shot home.

Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster made two appearances on Wood in the final stages – it was good to pick up a curling shot and then hold a header out from close range.

Burnley said they should have received a penalty in the latter incident where Wood’s shirt was pulled, but Southampton deserved the points and should have had a fourth when substitute Che Adams only had to beat Pope but shot wide.

Southampton moves up to 13th place with 36 points, ten above Fulham’s 18th place. Burnley is in 15th place with 33 points.

“It was a difficult start for us and usually an opponent who is not helpful when you have to accept two defeats,” said the boss of the saints, Ralph Hasenhuettl.

“Our decision-making in the final period was fantastic. We could have scored five or six or more goals against a team that normally don’t have many chances,” he added.

Burnley defender Tarkowski criticized the concentration of his team.

“It’s very dissimilar to us. Our record, to get a win or at least a draw, is one of the best in the league. To take a 2-0 lead you feel very comfortable, it really was a mental sloppy thing everyone. ” ,” he said.
