UK Department of International Trade supports Netflix’s virtual songwriting camp, CBS Music Supervisors

The UK Government’s Department of International Trade (DIT) has partnered with the Distiller Music Group in partnership with Ostereo, Arista Media Nashville and Accidental Ent. LA to host a virtual songwriting camp this week.

During the invitation-only week of sessions, 80 songwriters from the UK and the US wrote to specific letters received by music overseers around the world on behalf of Netflix, CBS and others.

These songwriters work with different partners every day and compose in real time with two other people through a series of virtual songwriting rooms.

Operations are coordinated by a specialized production team at The Distillery Studios of the Distiller Music Group in Bath, England.

At the end of each day, the results of each session are sent back to the studio, where they are mixed to be made available to the music supervisors.

All written songs are divided equally among the number of authors in the room (unless otherwise agreed on the day). Divided sheets are digitally signed and collected every day and distributed to all authors / publishers / executives involved.

This virtual camp brought together songwriters from Los Angeles, Nashville, Miami and London.

“In these difficult times for the songwriting community, we are very excited to work with the Department for International Trade and Ostero along with our other partners to facilitate this collaboration.”

The DIT teams in Great Britain and the USA, together with their partners, selected both the participating authors and the individual letters. As a result of the pandemic, these are practically happening, but under normal circumstances this would have been the 4th year the event was held in Los Angeles and the 6th year in Nashville.

The notable successes of previous DIT songwriting camps include placements in the Oscar-winning film The Shape of Water as well as in other Hollywood productions.

John Thompson, CEO of Distiller Music Group, said, “In these difficult times for the songwriting community, we are very excited to be working with the Department for International Trade and Ostero along with our other partners to facilitate this collaboration. We have so many talented people attending and an amazing range of panties. This is a really positive initiative that hopefully will result in amazing music. “

“We pride ourselves on helping these talented songwriters develop their craft and build international relationships.”

John Saunderson, Head of Ostereo Publishing & Management, said: “I am very excited to be part of this great global virtual writing camp with our friends from the Department for International Trade, the Distiller Music Group and our global partners.

“It’s amazing to see these great writers / producers embracing the diversity of this camp. You are working on important and independent artist letters as well as finding songs for Japanese / Korean bands. We also have some amazing sync briefs and some of the writers are straight out of their comfort zones, but as I always say, whether it’s indie, R&B, country, pop, or D&B … a good song is a good song! “

Emily Cloke, the UK Consul General in Los Angeles, said: “This songwriting camp shows the close relationship between the US and the UK in the music industry. We pride ourselves on helping these talented songwriters develop their craft and build international relationships. “
