(Reuters) – Hawaii Governor David Ige declared an emergency in the U.S. state after heavy rainfall brought flooding, landslides and fears of dam failure, resulting in evacuations in at least two counties while flood reports a second day remained in force.

The move came after a dam on the island of Maui overflowed, forced evacuations and destroyed homes. The “unsatisfactory” condition of the dam meant that it should be removed this year, the land ministry said.

“The emergency proclamation provides general government funds that can be used quickly and efficiently to help those affected by the storm,” said Ige on Tuesday.

Bad weather should last until Friday, he added. There were no immediate reports of deaths or losses.

The emergency statement applies to Hawaii, Maui, Kalawao, O’ahu and Kaua’i counties, the governor’s office said in a statement, while disaster relief runs through May 8.

In Maui, heavy rains damaged the roads and left them impassable, with one bridge completely washed out and another moved, the governor’s office said as higher water levels increased the risk of erosion and seepage.

State emergency management officials said the rains had led to the summit of Kaupakalua Dam in the northern region of Haiku, prompting authorities to open evacuation shelters and urge people not to return home.

Six homes were badly damaged or destroyed, Maui Mayor Michael Victorino said.
