Bitcoin billionaires: The rise in the currency rewards brave investors who took risks early on
- The US and China have the largest number of holders, but little data is available on holders in many corners of the world.
- Rumor has it that Satoshi Nakamoto, the currency’s founder and mysterious person, owns the largest amount of bitcoin and holds around 10% of the bitcoin in circulation.
- Micree Zhan, Michael Novogratz, Changpeng Zhao, the Winklevoss twins, and Chamath Palihapitiya are among the world’s largest Bitcoin holders.
Bitcoin is the world’s largest cryptocurrency with a market capitalization of over $ 943 billion (as of March 2021). It is considered by many to be one of the most successful digital currencies ever created, and it currently dominates the digital currency market with a whopping 61% share.
The biggest holders of bitcoin
Satoshi Nakamoto, the mysterious brain behind Bitcoin, owns the largest amount in the world. And while Nakamoto’s actual percentage is unknown, many speculate that the inventory equates to around 10% of all bitcoins in circulation. Satoshi Nakamoto is a Japanese name, but there is evidence that “Satoshi Nakamoto” may be a pseudonym for the real person or group behind Bitcoin. As such, Satoshi Nakamoto remains unknown.
Identical twin brothers Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, also known as the Winklevoss twins, own 180,000 bitcoins, most of them in the United States.
After reaching a $ 65 million settlement with Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg over disputes related to the social media network, the twins invested $ 11 million in Bitcoin, the world’s largest cryptocurrencies, in the first few days of 2013.
Micree Zhan, 42, owns most of the bitcoin in Asia. Zhan co-founded Bitmain, a company that makes application-specific integrated chips (ASIC) for mining Bitcoin.
In a 2018 report by Horun, Micree Zhan was named the world’s richest bitcoin billionaire, while Bloomberg named Zhan the world’s richest homemade billionaire under 40 in 2019. China has many bitcoin millionaires, but Zhan stands out for having a bitcoin portfolio valued at $ 3.2 billion.
On the downside
Other top owners
Michael Novogratz is another person with an oversized personal bitcoin inventory. The ex-hedge fund manager is currently valued at $ 3 billion and a large chunk of his fortune is made up of bitcoin. He currently runs Galaxy Holdings, a crypto trading company.
American Ross Ulbricht fell off the Bitcoin-rich list after the FBI stole thousands of Bitcoins from him for allegedly participating in seedy deals on the Silk Road. The FBI still holds its Bitcoin wallet to this day, and its estimated value is well over $ 100 million.
The American-Canadian Chamath Palihapitiya is another holder of massive amounts of bitcoins. In 2011, he publicly stated at a conference that he had 100,000 bitcoin, and in 2013 he announced his intention to purchase additional bitcoins worth $ 10 to 15 million, making him one of the world’s leading bitcoin holders.
Changpeng Zhao, founder of the Binance crypto exchange, is believed to hold significant amounts of Bitcoin, which has increased his net worth to over $ 1 billion. Chris Larsen, the founder of the payment services company, is also a major Bitcoin holder with a net worth of $ 7 billion. However, much of his net worth comes from his holdings in the XRP cryptocurrency.
It is unclear who the top Bitcoin holders are outside of North America and Asia, particularly in countries like Africa and Europe, due to factors such as uncertainty about government policies, a lack of publicity regarding Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in general, and a lack of public records and transparency.
